Well what a fantastic six months I’ve had on this little journey of rediscovery I’ve embarked on, and it’s fantastic to announce that I have reached the first milestone!
My exam and assessment are completed and currently being marked and adjudicated by the lovely people over at Ashdown Academy and the Chartered Institute of Marketing. The most amusing moment for me will be answering the exam question “What is back projection?”. I perused over this for about ten minutes before finally writing down the answer, which obviously I knew, just in case it was a trick! Results are due in October everyone so fingers crossed!
The big news though is that I can officially announce that I am an Events Manager!
I attended my first non-events industry trade show yesterday, with no other #Eventprofs in sight (although it wasn’t quite the same without you all)! And my first ever non-events industry Keynote? A fantastic presentation by Mulberry Founder Roger Saul who explained that back in the late 70s the ‘IT’ purchase was the belt and that hardly anyone carried a bag… who knew! He also gave a fantastic quote “If you haven’t got a passion in your business don’t do it”!
So what are the biggest things I have learnt over the past six months whilst I’ve made the switch? Well number one would have to be hard work really does pay off and as I’ve written in earlier posts you really can achieve anything if you put your mind to it. It’s been a two year slog and I’ve had to juggle the old schedule and time management and at times it’s been pretty hard going, but I got there in the end and it’s proof that no matter what age if you want to make a change then it really is possible.
Most importantly number two, I’ve had fun! Both starting Diary and the EWL Club, the events I’ve volunteered at, and meeting so many new people as I build a fantastic network of industry peers and colleagues.
Here’s to this new chapter and whatever it may hold, and here’s also to realising your passion and striving for your goals.
In true ‘Diary of an #Eventprof’ style I’ll leave you with a few quotes:
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.” – Mark Twain
“I used to want the words ‘She Tried’ on my tombstone, Now I want ‘She Did It’.” – Katherine Dunham
“Really it comes down to your philosophy, do you want to play it safe and be good or do you want to take a chance and be great?” – Jimmy J
“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” – Harriet Tubman
Until next time #Eventprofs…
